The SECX Trains

The Southeast Coal Company was not a railroad in the traditional sense, although it owned locomotives, cars, and cabs.  SECX equipment was purchased in the late 70s when the L&N could not keep up with demand in the coal-boom years.  To keep it’s operations fully supplied with motive power and hoppers, the Southeast Coal Company purchased some ex-UP GP20s and its own set of hoppers to keep coal flowing to and from its prep plant at Calla, KY, on the L&N’s EK Sub.  The SECX modernized it’s equipment further in 1979 with the purchase of GP38-2s.
